This project started with a study of biodegradable materials from a creative textile class. Since I'm interested in transparent materials, I chose to work with bioplastic. Moreover, this material meets the circular design principles; it can be reused and can be reshaped or returned to its original liquid form through the use of heat.
“The Floating Nostalgia” brings back my personal favorites during my childhood days in forms of bioplastic. It also reflects the importance of circular design; to raise awareness about environmental issues, especially materials that are not biodegradable. Using biodegradable materials in our daily lives that can be made at home, is one of the great examples. This eco-friendly bioplastic can aesthetically be applied to several applications such as home decorations (statues, pictures) or fashion and textile products (fashion shoes).

“The Floating Nostalgia” เป็นการนำของส่วนตัวที่ชื่นชอบจากเวลาในแต่ละช่วงวัยหวนคืนกลับมาในรูปแบบของ bioplastic เพื่อสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของ circular design อีกทั้งต้องการให้ผู้คนตระหนักถึงปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมของวัสดุที่ย่อยสลายไม่ได้ พร้อมทั้งได้เรียนรู้ว่าสามารถนำ biomaterials ซึ่งเป็นวัสดุที่ eco-friendly มาพัฒนาให้กลายเป็นสิ่งของต่างๆในรูปแบบที่สวยงามได้เช่น ของตกแต่งบ้าน (รูปปั้น รูปภาพ) หรือ รองเท้าแฟชั่น โดยผลงานทั้งหมดสามารถทำขึ้นเองได้ที่บ้าน
What are the challenges?
"It’s a bit difficult for the first time to create biomaterials without knowledge, and the ratio of ingredients has to be perfect so that the biomaterials turn out to be of good quality."
Why do you find these ingredients/materials interesting?
"I do like the transparent materials because they could look good on your body; they have interesting effects when interacting with lighting, this suits the clean and minimalist aesthetic that I love. To me, bioplastics are suitable for fashion collections and home decorations, based on the way they look."
Do you feel content with the work?
"Absolutely yes. This project was so enjoyable. I hope my project more or less would be useful for everyone who wants to realise biomaterials and circular design in the future."
What do/don't you like about working with biomaterials?
👍 It challenged me to do the things that I've never done and the final result was better than I expected.
👎 Waiting for bioplastics to dry.
Do you want to explore more with biomaterials in the future?
"Yes, I do. Because I think the fashion industry should be more sustainable, now it creates tons of waste and pollution. In the future, I hope the industry will have to change in a better way for people regarding environmental issues."
Kittithorn Laipornpom - Student
As a fashion student at Chulalongkorn University, Kittithorn is passionate about developing sustainable directions for the fashion and art industry through her bioplastics experiment. Her project has elevated the value of fashion items; using biomaterials made from gelatin or biodegradable substances, instead of traditional leather or fabrics. In the near future, she is determined to make an art installation from biodegradable materials.
