Bio-de-decor gives new life to used coffee grounds, by combining coffee grounds with bio-based binders (xanthan gum, gelatine) to create a new material. The biomaterial can potentially be developed into a piece of furniture that meets the principles of the circular economy. This project comprises an experiment, which is in search of how to make strong components for a table, the prototype of an actual table and other home decorations such as organiser trays, candle holders, etc. The purpose is to show people the value of leftover coffee grounds; they are not just garbage, as well as demonstrate the benefits of coffee grounds; in which they can be used as an alternative material that is environmentally friendly.

What are the challenges?
"Makes me endure until I get what I want and solve problems or observe during the making whether the work is not dry or moldy."
Why do you find these ingredients/materials interesting?
"I was involved in making coffee soaps when I was a kid. And below the accommodation, there is a coffee shop that makes me feel that it’s something close to me. Also, this coffee shop produces a good deal of garbage each day."
Do you feel content with the work?
"No, If I had more time to work on it, it would be more perfect and beautiful overall."
What do/don't you like about working with biomaterials?
"I enjoy working with biomaterials because it makes me more patient. But I don’t like to wait until the used coffee grounds are completely dried. It takes quite a while if you make the material in bulk."
Do you want to explore more with biomaterials in the future?
"If I have time I will do it in the future because it's very interesting and make food waste useful and can also be biodegradable."
Puncharat Navamongkolchaikij - Student
Puncharat is a fashion student who is interested in biomaterials; she endeavors to research and explore these alternatives. She was introduced to a creative textile class where she worked with used coffee grounds. Her recent project comprises an experiment and a collection of products made from coffee grounds; working in various ways to determine how to make them the strongest. She believes that it is possible to reduce global food waste by using biomaterials to make more sustainable products.
